my woods

I have owned two cabins in the woods...one was on the banks of the Licking River near Mt.Olivet, Kentucky and, the other is in Rockcastle County...which I named "Shady Oaks"...after my childhood love in the mountains of California. The cabin at Shady Oaks looks out, to a view of a pond.

The cabins elicit many wonderful memories for me and my family...we spent many weekends there enjoying & observing nature's marvels. I love the presence of water...it brings forth life...and I love the woods. When I look at my woods, I always think of this poem by Robert Frost...It is one of my favorites.

Stopping by a Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know
His house is in the village though
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake

The woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep

You sent me by mail this poem and it was the only poem I've ever memerized by heart. It's funny because I was thinking about dad this morning and he liked this poem. I said Dad, I know that you loved me and that's enough.
And to you my precious mom. I know that you lve me and that will always be enough.

Loved the pictures and the poem. I'm glad you kept your promise and posted it.

(You're getting good at this blogging thing!)

Love these pictures and the poem, of course. Nothing like living in the woods, is there? Thanks for your comments on my blog. Love the 'no shoes' story! Of course we mothers would give the shirt off our back (or the shoe off our foot) for our kids! And not think twice about it. Great stuff. Are you kin to Motherkitty?

Susan, Sandy and I are sisters-in-law (Sandy and my husband are brother-sister), but we feel and act just like sisters. We talk every day and visit each other whenever we can although we live on opposite sides of the state -- we're west and they're east.

(Sorry, Sandy for butting in. Now, it's your turn.)

Susan, There is no better place to live than the woods. I breaks my heart to see 'city folk' move into the woods and the first things they do is cut down those beautiful old trees...they should just stay in the city.

Yes, we mothers would do anything for our kids...after all...what are mothers for?

Your answer about Motherkitty is YES...in fact there are six of us bloggers.

Sister Motherkitty,
Thank you for answering Susan's question so nicely.

BTW your comment was not there while I was posting mine back to Susan. Sorry.

I was having trouble passing the Word Verification Test...I had to do it 3 times!!!

I have fond memories of your Shady Oaks from the couple of times I have been there. It has been a long time to read this poem, and it is good to read it again. I also like it very well.

I also have trouble with word verification sometimes, when the fonts are all squished and wiggly
