Rose of Sharon

We have several Rose of Sharon bushes around the yard and they're beautiful, as you can see from the pictures, but they grow like weeds. They're all in bloom right now and we have 3 different colors...pink, white and lavender.
In this particular picture above, there are pink, white and you can barely see a piece of a lavender flower in the lower right side of the picture.
I had a very difficult time trying to get the lavender blooms to show up in lavender. But I think in the picture above you can see the difference in color between the pink & the lavender blooms.
Above are pink & white blooms...they are just so beautiful. Some of the bushes are solid color bushes and others have either two, or three colors within the same bush.

I was saying they grow like weeds because these bushes come up EVERYWHERE...Anywhere one of their seeds fall, a new bush will sprout up and I think that probably birds must carry the seeds around also because these seeds are too heavy to be carried by the wind, but they can sprout 300 feet away from the parent plants. We are constantly fighting off these bushes and it's best to plant them where you can mow around them to keep them from spreading.

I really love these beauties and I think I may just plant some more, here & there, in the yard away from my flower beds of course.

Our neighbor has a different variety of the Rose of Sharon...Her flowers are filled with petals...very fluffy looking and you can't see the stamen in the center. They also don't spread, so I am assuming they are some sort of hybrid flower. I love the way mine look and I love the different colors and even though we are constantly fighting them off, I still would plant them again.

Jimmy just read my post and said that I should have also said that you can't kill the damn things unless you dig them up.

I told him that I couldn't use that word in my G Rated blog, but that I would publish his comment.

Sandy ~ We have a Rose of Sharon on the southwest corner of our house that is as high as the bottom of the second story windows. It is more of a purple color that yours, but actually I like the color of yours BETTER! ~ Thanks for sharing your beautiful Rose of Sharon! ~ jb

I pass a very large ranch on my Saturday run and the name of it is Rose of Sharon. I always assumed itwas so named because it is close to Roebud, Ar., I could be wrong. Shhh, don't tell anyone that I admitted to that.

Beautiful post! I love the Rose of Sharon and as you saw in my post I only have the one.You have explained what I was seeing all around the base earlier this season..little green sprouts so natureboy and I hand picked them...good thing as you said they would have been more plants. Can't have that One is fine for my garden space thankyou!

We had three of them in our back yard - except they weren't bushes - they were trees! The largest grew to about 20 feet tall.
...I don't know if they have a limited life expectancy, but one of them died and another only had leaves and flowers on half the tree.
...It's true how they can pop up in several different places in the yard.

Pea...I told Jimmy that you were going to wash his mouth out with soap and he just laughed.

Tammy...thanks for your comment.

LZ...yes they do get VERY, VERY tall, but we prune ours every year in early spring.

Jelly...I'm more partial to the pink flowers, but they're all pretty and YES I'm having a great day.

daybyday...they want to grow in our fence too, but we won't let them or we wouldn't be able to control them.

Squire...don't worry, your secret is safe with me.

naturegirl...I'm glad that I was able to shed some light on your little sprouts. Your garden is so beautiful & well kept that it has been an inspiration to me to do better with mine.

hale mckay...they do get as tall as trees if you leave them alone. They grow above our roof line if we let them, but we keep them trimmed. I may plant one out in the middle of the backyard and just let it grow and see what happends.

Whether they are a pest or not, they're certainly beautiful and so fresh and cool looking.

Hi Sandy, thanks for your encouraging words about the dental stuff. What you mentioned is one of my options. What is bad is that the new problems are occuring under the crowns on teeth repaired a few years back. I just don't quite know what to do...but my tummy is keeping score...ya know??
Beautiful flower pictures, very unlike regular roses, aren't they?? Have a great weekend! Hugs, Finn

Sandy, your Rose of Sharon are spectacular. I love all the colors, but the pink is my favorite. Aren't the colors lovely together?
They're so slow to begin growth here in the spring, and then slow to flower too. Lovely when they do though. My hubby just planted one this spring. It's growing well but I doubt it'll flower this year. It's hard to imagine them being pests :)
Such lovely pictures!!
Thanks for visiting and leaving such a wonderful comment :)
Our DSL is not going to happen today....boo hoo! There was a problem with a cable and we weren't able to receive a signal. When the cable is fixed we'll be all set. What's a couple more days when we've had dial up for six years? We were disappointed though :(

The Rose of Sharon sounds like my type of plant - can't kill it. I wonder how it would do in a pot. Yours are so lovely - like the mixed colors best.

We had these in the back yard when I was kid. Ours were tall-not bushy. Maybe a different type. Happy weekend!

I love the Rose of Sharon bush and or tree....I have a tree, and it is so heavy with flowers that it is drooping.....I'm going to have to trim it again.....they are the easiest thing to grow....

Nice pictures......
