Last night I fell asleep with a lifesaver in my mouth.
Thankfully it must have dissolved some before I kind of swallowed it. Well, I really don't know if I swallowed it or not, but when I roused up briefly it was lodged and stuck in my throat beyond my reach, and very uncomfortable.
I tried swallowing, then I tried pushing it up by applying pressure to the spot on my neck where it seemed to be. That didn't work. It was stuck but thankfully I could still breathe okay.
Then I tried drinking water from my night stand and when that didn't work, I went and got some hot water and drank another 16 more ounces. Still nothing, so I went into the bathroom, huddled over the toilet and tried sticking my finger down my throat and giving it a push. Still nothing, still stuck, so I thought maybe if I gagged myself again this might bring it up. NO, that still didn't work either.
It was still stuck, but I did manage to move it down my throat just a little bit. I drank more water, still nothing so I decided to try to go to sleep, but with something stuck in your throat waiting to choke you the minute you fall asleep, it was hard falling asleep. With that awful thought that you might not wake up in the morning, who could sleep anyway.
But I didn't have to worry about falling to sleep after all anytime soon, because my bladder had other ideas. Every few minutes I had to get up to empty it, so falling asleep was out of the question after all.
I got plenty of exercise getting up and down til the sun came up. I drank two cups of hot coffee thinking that this would surely melt it away, but it didn't. The uncomfortable lump remained lodged in my throat. There was always the emergency room, but I hate going there. That was a possible last resort.
Around 2:00 p.m. I got hungry, so I fixed me something to eat and the food must have dragged the piece of lifesaver down with it. What a relief!!!!
If I had known it was going to be that easy to dislodge, I would have eaten something last night.
So tonight I'm sucking on a lifesaver, but I'm staying sitting up until it is all dissolved and gone. I still feel like there is a little tiny piece still there, but it just might be my irritated throat, but it's now at the base of my neck.
Lesson learned. Don't suck on lifesavers while lying down listening to podcasts that put you to sleep.
